Sale 1139 Lot 218 Nov 27, 2015 10:00 AM              Sold for $63,000

Mid 19th century, pine. Molded lid and base, and retaining its polychrome paint decoration, consisting of checkered ends and central pinwheels. Darkened varnish. 4.5"h. 13.5"w. 7"d.

Period pencil notations (related to agricultural produce) include the names D.J. Miller and Cyrus Coleman.
Estimate $ 1,000-2,000

The original paint colors are difficult to discern because of the darkened and grungy varnish, but our best guess is black (ground), cream, and orange. The design is freehand painted within incised lines (including compass-delineated central motifs). One 2 1/2 section of bottom molding missing, otherwise the box is in fine condition with original tin hinges.

We provide condition information when it is requested by a potential bidder, as a part of our dedication to excellent customer service. However, the absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, repairs, restorations or the effects of aging. Garth’s Auctions shall have no responsibility for any error or omission regarding an item's condition. We encourage you to call or email with any questions. We also encourage you to come see us and preview the auction in-person. Thank you for your business.
